Kampung Kuyungon
Established since 1964, the term originates from the word 'muyug-kuyung,' which describes someone on a long journey. Most of the residents come from Kampung Longkogungan, Penampang, who migrated in search of better sources of income and have now become permanent residents of Kampung Kuyungon.
The aspiring Green Village
Kuyungon has recently gained international recognition by being adopted by Trash Hero World, a Swiss-based NGO dedicated to promoting sustainable living and waste management. This partnership aims to transform Kuyungon into a model village that exemplifies eco-friendly living, with a particular emphasis on effective rubbish and plastic waste management. The collaboration with Trash Hero World underscores Kuyungon’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its ambition to become a beacon of sustainability in the region.

In addition to its efforts in waste management, Kuyungon stands out as the only village in Tambunan—and potentially all of Sabah—that embraces the innovative Eco Tamu Concept. This concept integrates traditional markets with modern ecological practices, encouraging local communities to sell and trade goods in a way that minimizes environmental impact. The Eco Tamu Concept not only supports local economies but also fosters a culture of environmental awareness and responsibility among residents and visitors alike.

Achieving the status of a Green Village requires significant effort, including extensive studies and lifestyle adjustments. Kuyungon is acutely aware of the challenges involved in this transformation, but the community is driven by a strong belief in the importance of action over inertia. Rather than being daunted by the magnitude of the task, Kuyungon’s residents are motivated by a shared vision of a sustainable future. They understand that even small, initial steps can lead to significant changes and set a powerful example for others to follow.

In Kuyungon, the journey towards sustainability is viewed as a collective endeavor that will benefit not only the current inhabitants but also future generations. The village’s proactive approach to eco-friendly living serves as an inspiration to other communities in Sabah and beyond. By starting with practical changes in daily habits and community practices, Kuyungon is taking concrete steps to ensure that it not only meets the criteria for a Green Village but also becomes a sustainable and thriving community for years to come.
